Obituary

William W. McKelvey, Jr., 77, of Arendtsville, died Friday, February 27, 2009 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Josephine C. (Wetzel) McKelvey.

Born December 7, 1931 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late William W. and Mary (Carbaugh) McKelvey, Sr.

Mr. McKelvey was employed with the Pennsylvania State Civil Service in Harrisburg for twelve years until his retirement in 1992. Previously, he worked for the Farm Workers of America in Gettysburg.

Mr. McKelvey's passion was golf. He worked as a starter at Carroll Valley Golf Resort where he was the namesake for "McKelvey's Way." Throughout his golfing career, he had four holes-in-one at various golf courses, including Carroll Valley, Caledonia, and Mountain View.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are six daughters, Roxanne Hunt of Florida, Donna Sterner of Texas, Brenda Lee Slaybaugh of York Springs, Mary Ellen Huff of York Springs, Susan Elizabeth McKelvey of Georgia, and Jane Catherine Shaw of Dillsburg; four sons, Brian McKelvey of Massachusetts, Michael McKelvey of Chambersburg, Kevin McKelvey of Massachusetts, and Mathew McKelvey of Hanover; one brother, Richard McKelvey of St. Thomas, PA; one sister, Mabel Bard of Gettysburg; 29 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Billy McKelvey.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, with Pastor Gregg Keckler officiating. Viewing will be held between 6 and 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A second viewing will begin 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
