Born February 11, 1936 in Littlestown, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd Harry and Ruth (Miller) Flickinger.

Mrs. Shafer was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg. A graduate of Gettysburg High School, she was most recently employed as a bookkeeper with Adams County National Bank. Previously, Mrs. Shafer was employed at Murphy's 5 & 10, Arendtsville Shoe Factory, Dal-Tile, and the Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village.

Mrs. Shafer loved flowers, and she cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Kenneth E. Shafer and wife Karen of Arendtsville, and James A. Shafer and wife Tina of Biglerville; her daughter, Janet L. Shafer of Gettysburg; her brother, Richard Flickinger, of Gettysburg; her sister, Joyce Vinson of Emmitsburg; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Flickinger.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, with Rev. Michael E. Allwein officiating. A viewing will be held between 7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A second viewing will begin 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Benders Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kenneth E. Shafer, James A. Shafer, Daniel E. Shafer, Josh L. Shafer, David Martin, and Kevin Foltz.
