Obituary

Rufus J. Wagner, 73, of Gettysburg, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village. He was the loving husband of Barbara Ann (Rummel) Wagner who died July 20, 2009.

Born October 24, 1936 in Sinking Spring, he was the son of the late Raymond and Catherine (Fox) Wagner.

Mr. Wagner was a devoted member of the Gettysburg Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, church board member and played on the softball team. Also, he was a delegate to the District and National Annual Conference.

Upon graduating from Wilson High School in West Lawn in 1955, he volunteered with the Brethren Volunteer Service in Fresno, California where he also attended college. During his time with the Brethren Volunteer Service, he met his wife Barbara. They eventually moved to Gettysburg where Mr. Wagner began a career at Gettysburg College as the printing office manager, a career spanning more than 30 years. After retiring from Gettysburg College, he was employed with Jacoby Transportation.

A "farm boy" at heart, he enjoyed time in his gardens. He will be lovingly remembered as a gentle, kind man of few words with a big heart always willing to serve others.

He is survived by three sons, Michael K. Wagner and his wife Lauren, David S. Wagner and his wife Brenda, both of Gettysburg, and Timothy L. Wagner and his wife Maria of Dillsburg; his daughter, Gwenda K. Eyler and her husband Dale of Littlestown; his brother, John Wagner of Lansdale; his sister, Anna Reber of Midlothian, VA and fourteen grandchildren, Stephanie Rosenberry, Brandon Rosenberry, Joseph Wagner, Ridge Wagner, Brooke Wagner, Kassandra Eyler, Brady Eyler, Ashton Eyler, Avery Eyler, Bryson Eyler, Kenzie Eyler, Kaden Eyler, Raymond "Mitch" Wagner, and Clayton "C.J." Wagner.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Gettysburg Church of the Brethren, 1710 Biglerville Road, Gettysburg, with Pastor Karl Stone and Pastor Patricia Arendt officiating. Viewing will be held between 9:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday at church. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the church.

A graveside service will be held 11:15 a.m. Monday, August 2, 2010 at View Point Cemetery in Mohrsville, PA. Family and friends will meet 8:45 a.m. Monday at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, to drive to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Michael K. Wagner, David S. Wagner, Timothy L. Wagner, Dale Eyler, Brady Eyler, and Ridge Wagner. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
