Obituary

Roger L. Sprague, 75, of Gettysburg and formerly of Readsboro, VT, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Golden Living Center, Gettysburg. He was the husband of Mary (Wilson) Sprague, his wife of 49 years, who died January 28, 2011.

Born January 11, 1936 in Readsboro, he was a son of the late James Sprague and Mildred Tanner Jillson.

Mr. Sprague was raised on the family dairy farm in Readsboro where he began his lifelong love of farming. After graduating from high school, he served in the US Air Force where he specialized in intelligence operations throughout the world between 1954 and 1965. He was then recruited by the National Security Agency where he served until 1974.

Upon retiring from the NSA, Roger returned to dairy farming with his wife in Adams County. They continued to operate the farm until 1993. A few years later, he began his real estate career with Mountain View Realty in Gettysburg and later became owner/operator of Century 21 Realty, Gettysburg.

Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Moreton of Frisco, TX, and Karen Smyth and her husband William of Dale City, VA; two grandchildren, Jason Smyth and Samantha Smyth, both of Blacksburg, VA; his brothers, Harold "Bud" Sprague and his wife Dayle of Whitingham, VT, Rick King and his wife Karyn of Massachusetts, and Walter Sprague and his wife Joyce of Gettysburg; his sister, Sandy King and her husband Alan of Massachusetts; his sister-in-law Martha Jillson of Readsboro; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Guy Roger Sprague; and a brother, Philip Jillson.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 5 at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, with Chaplain Sally E. Daminger officiating. The family will receive friends between 6 and 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Arendtsville, where full military honors will be provided by Adams County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
