Born June 25, 1930 in Bluefield, VA, he was the son of Robert M. Grissom and Elsie (Ratcliff) Bush.

Mr. Smith was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Gettysburg, for over 30 years. He was employed as a maintenance electrician with Temple-Inland Corrugated Packaging for 37 years. Prior to that, he was employed at Gettysburg Furniture Factory for many years.

Mr. Smith enjoyed camping and was a member of the Gettysburg Wanderers Camping Club. He also enjoyed playing bass for the Blue Sky Boys. A Civil War buff, Mr. Smith loved touring battlefields and reading about the war. In his free time, he liked flying model airplanes and putting his creativity to use by designing bulletins for church and greeting cards for family and friends.

Surviving are two daughters, Deborah E. Horn and her husband Bruce of Gettysburg, and Kathy R. DeVine and her husband Steve of New Oxford; three grandchildren, Matthew S. Horn of Red Lion, Sarah E. Horn of Gettysburg, and Martin J. Horn of Gettysburg; and one great-grandson, Andrew Griffith; and her brother-in-law, Robert C. Grove of York Springs.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty J. Grove.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Memorial Baptist Church, 1096 Biglerville Road, Gettysburg, with Pastor Steven F. Baker and Rev. Suzanne A. Elliott officiating. A viewing will be held between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday at church. A second viewing will begin 10 a.m. Wednesday at church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bruce Horn, Matthew Horn, Martin Horn, Michael Mummert, Dean Carey, Jr., and Robert Stull.
