Richard Eugene
Tharp
Sep 10, 1944 — May 28, 2025
Richard Eugene Tharp, 80, of Gettysburg, entered God's eternal care on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the Gardens at Gettysburg. He was the devoted husband of Judy K. Tharp; together they shared 22 wonderful years of marriage filled with love and laughter.
Born on September 10, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was a son of the late Paul A. and Beatrice I. (Billow) Tharp.
Richard was raised in the Baltimore area and graduated from high school there. Following graduation, he served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his military service, Richard opened Tharp's Barber Shop in Hanover, where he spent many years as both owner and barber, forming countless friendships along the way.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Richard cherished his family above all else and treasured every moment spent with them. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, he was a faithful member of Heritage Assembly of God, where he played guitar with the worship team and encouraged others to draw closer to God.
Richard was a music enthusiast with an impressive record collection, especially of Elvis Presley, amassing over 2,000 albums spanning various artists. He was also a devoted animal lover.
In addition to his beloved wife, Judy, Richard is survived by his daughters: Jacquie McCauslin and her husband, Pastor Todd, of Biglerville, and Jan Dom and her husband, Aaron, of York. He was a proud grandfather to Curtis and Carly Dom. He is also survived by nephews Dean K. Tharp and Brent A. Tharp, both of Hanover; many loving extended family members; and his cherished church family and friends.
Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Dale A. Tharp, and nephew, Steven W. Tharp.
A service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Heritage Assembly of God, 1575 Chambersburg Road, Gettysburg, with his son-in-law, Pastor Todd McCauslin, officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Aaron Dom, Josiah McCauslin, Brent Tharp, Glenn McCauslin, Dave Swope, Butch Lamer, Ron VanBrakle, and Eric Herring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Assembly of God, 1575 Chambersburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
