Raymond L. Haber, 73, of Orrtanna, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Kathleen W. (Armstrong) Haber; together they celebrated 51 years of marriage on November 13, 2022.
Born September 8, 1949 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Paul Edward and Melvina Charlotte (Robinson) Haber.
Ray graduated from Wheaton High School, Wheaton, MD in 1968 and served in the United States Marines Corp from 1968 to 1976 as a helicopter crew chief and mechanic. He served tours of duty in Vietnam and Okinawa. Upon his discharge from the Marines, he began his career with the Washington, DC Metro where he was employed for 27 years as a subway mechanic.
A very active member of the Knights of Columbus, Ray held many offices, including Grand Knight, District Warden, District Deputy and Financial Secretary. He was a charter member of St. Michael's Council 10525 in Mt. Airy, MD where he also served as Grand Knight. Ray was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, Orrtanna and was a charter member of the St. Ignatius Knights of Columbus Council. Through his service with the Knights, he was able to see Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul when they were visiting Washington, DC. Strong in his Catholic faith, Ray was a eucharistic minister, just like his sister Louise.
Ray was devoted to his wife Kathy, his children, Debra and Ray, Jr. and many other family members. He and Kathy enjoyed camping with their children that began when they were very young and continued until July of 2021.
In addition to his loving wife of 51 years, Ray is survived by his daughter, Debra Haber, Orrtanna; daughter-in-law, Betty R. Haber, Westminster, MD; brothers, Eddie Haber, Sumter, SC and John Haber, West Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren, Ashley Zell and husband Brad, Hagerstown, MD, Alice Haber, Elkridge, MD, Austin Haber, Westminster, MD, Bryce Johnson, York, PA, Ally Johnson, York, PA and Gavin Haber, Westminster, MD; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and his beloved dogs, Snookums and Tucker.
He was preceded in death by his son, Raymond L. Haber, Jr., sister, Louise Kraft and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gerald C. and Betty L. (Barnhill) Armstrong.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Monday, November 21, 2022 at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 1095 Church Rd., Orrtanna with Rev. Fr. Dominic M. DiBiccaro, celebrant. The family will receive friends and share memories on Sunday, November 20, 2022 from 3 to 5 PM with a Vigil for the Deceased at 4:30 PM at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg. Interment, at a later date, will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
