Pius O. Hess, Sr., 86, of Gettysburg, formerly of New Oxford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at the Gardens at Gettysburg. He was the loving husband of Rose Marie (Rosensteel) Hess; together they celebrated their 64 ^th wedding anniversary on December 24 ^th .

Born Monday, June 20, 1932 in Carlisle, he was a son of the late Cletus J. and Bessie M. (Bigham) Hess.

Mr. Hess served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1954. After the service he worked at a carpenter and maintenance worker for most of his life, retiring from Trimen Industries.

In addition to his wife, Pius is survived by four children, Pius Hess, Jr. and his wife Chris of New Oxford, Jean Taylor and her husband Gary of Gettysburg, Lisa Wonder and her husband Roger of New Oxford, Sherry Youngbar and her husband Ken of New Oxford; five grandchildren, Toby Taylor, Tammy Taylor, Barbie Marks, Nikki Wonder, Connor Youngbar; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Sarah Wolf of Carlisle, Janice Long of Boiling Springs; two brothers, Guy Hess of Mechanicsburg, Paul Hess of Mt. Holly Springs, and many other loving extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Pius was preceded in death by a brother, Cletus Hess, Jr. and a sister, Lois Helems.

There will be no public viewing, following cremation; a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church, 25 W. High St. Gettysburg, PA with Father Daniel C. Mitzel officiating. The family will receive friends to share memories of Pius on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
