It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Riley Maitland of Hanover, PA, who was lovingly surrounded by family when she peacefully departed on July 2, 2024 at the age of 83.

Joyce was born on July 2, 1941 in Gettysburg, PA to Holbert and Edith (Bupp) Riley.

Throughout her life, Joyce was known for her love of holidays, cooking and entertaining guests. She had a passion for her family, especially her grandchildren. Joyce was a shining example of resilience, bravely overcoming breast and lung cancer and continuing to live her life with grace and determination. Her warmth and care were evident in every interaction, and she treated her family and friends with an unwavering kindness that will be remembered by all who knew her. She shared over 50 wonderful years of marriage to her high school sweetheart, Gary Maitland, who passed away in 2017.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Jean Howe, in 2023.

Throughout her career, Joyce demonstrated remarkable versatility and talent. She graduated from Harrisburg School of Nursing where she went on to become a labor and delivery nurse at Annie M. Warner Hospital (now Wellspan Gettysburg Hospital). After that she opened and operated Aztec Pottery at the International Village, a small collection of specialty shops south of Gettysburg in the 1970s. Thereafter she became vice president of Jim Garrahy's Fudge Kitchen before ultimately returning to nursing at Hoffman Homes until retirement.

Joyce is survived by her three children: Stephen Maitland and his wife Melinda (Alpharetta, GA), Scott Maitland (Hanover, PA), and Wendy Flax and her husband Jon (Gettysburg, PA); six grandchildren: Jessica, Paige, Alaine, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Emily; three great-grandchildren: Abby, Asher, and Zoey; two sisters: Linda Bushey and her husband Conway (Chambersburg, PA), and Kathy Lytle and her husband David (Lafayette, IN); brothers-in-law: Robert Howe (Tucson, AZ), Greg Maitland and his partner Carolyn (Wickenburg, AZ), Eric Maitland (Gettysburg, PA), Tedd Maitland and his wife Heather (Yulee, FL), and Rusty Maitland and wife Lori (Phoenix, AZ); as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Joyce's life will be held on August 3, 2024 at Peters Funeral Home located at 321 Carlisle Street in Gettysburg, PA. The family will receive extended family and friends starting at 10:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
