Joseph Edward Sunbury, 91, of New Oxford, passed away May 7, 2014 at The Brethren Home, New Oxford. He was the loving husband of Janice M. (Raffensperger) Gilbert Sunbury, who passed away in 2007.
Born February 6, 1923 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Mathias and Violet (Little) Sunbury.
Joseph was employed with the PA Dept. of Labor and Industry as an administrative assistant. Mr. Sunbury served as Justice of the Peace for 16 years. He was active in the Boy Scouts and received the statute for outstanding work with boys and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Joseph served as a Deacon for Trinity U.C.C. in Biglerville. He was the past Master of the Biglerville Grange where he was a 6th degree Granger. Mr. Sunbury was past President of the Biglerville Lions Club, was a member of the Biglerville Fire Co., Biglerville Senior Center, served in the Biglerville Police Force, and was a lay person for the Methodist Church.
Surviving are his son, George W. Sunbury of Victoria, VA; step-daughter, Peggy Diveley of Biglerville; step-sons, Robert and George Gilbert; sister, Teresa McKin; step-brother, Robert F. Sumbury; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his brother, William, Leon and Harry Sunbury.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Mr. Sunbury will be private at the convenience of the family at Biglerville Cemetery.
