Born December 25, 1930 in Wilkes County, NC, he was a son of the late James T. and Myrtle (Holland) Benton.

Mr. Benton was a member of the First Baptist Church, Gettysburg. A veteran of the US Air Force, he served his country honorably in Korea. Mr. Benton was employed as an auto dealer throughout most of his life. He was a life member of the VFW Gettysburg, and he loved NASCAR and his animals, especially his cat, Sandy.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, James S. Benton of Bowdon, GA, and Michael Benton of Morganton, NC; his daughter, Barbara Lynne Davis of Mooresville, NC; three step-daughters, Diane Heller of Carnegie, PA, Darlene Allen of Weaverville, NC, and Fran Althoff of Gettysburg; his sister, Mary Vannoy of Gettysburg; two uncles, Clarence Benton and Roscoe Benton, both of North Carolina; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces; and one grand-niece.

The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2009 at First Baptist Church, 1015 Chambersburg Road, Gettysburg, with Rev. Carl G. Harris officiating. A viewing will be held between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday at church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Gettysburg, where full military honors will be provided by Adams County Allied Veterans Association. The Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Serving as pallbearers will be Wayne Forsythe, Bryan Heller, Ryan Edmiston, Bryan Edmiston, Charles Klinefelter, Keith Klinefelter, and James Althoff, Jr.
