Jim W. Johnson, 73 of Gettysburg passed peacefully on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Janet L. (McKinney) Johnson of Gettysburg.
He was born October 31, 1938 in Federalsburg, MD the son of Pauline Elizabeth (Chambers) Johnson Willey of Westminster, MD and the late Willard Allen Johnson.
Jim was born and raised on the Eastern Shore and graduated from Easton High School, Easton, MD. He proudly served his country in the Navy from 1956 to 1962 on the USS Fessessden and later owned and operated a restaurant until 2001. Later he worked for Gettysburg Ghost Tours and Tales on the Beach, Ocean City, MD.
A very active member of Piney Creek Presbyterian Church, Harney, MD, he enjoyed making crosses and wooden church items. He also enjoyed cooking, fishing and collecting LP records and die cast metal cars. Jim enjoyed taking people on ghost tours through Gettysburg and taking hotel guests out on the beach in Ocean City, MD telling pirate stories. Above all, Jim cherished time spent with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and old Navy buddies.
In addition to his wife and mother, Jim is survived by his daughters, Donna Compher and her husband Kevin of Berlin, MD and Michael Ann Phillips and her husband John of Federalsburg, MD, step-daughter, Michelle Spielman and her husband Michael of Fairfield, PA, step-son, Robin Bollinger of Owings Mills, MD, grandchildren, Atlea and Mollie Compher of Berlin, MD and Jordan and Jamie Phillips of Federalsburg, MD and step grandchildren, Christopher and Allison Spielman of Fairfield, PA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 1:30 PM at Piney Creek Presbyterian Church, 4472 Harney Road, Taneytown, MD with Rev. H. Paul Matthews, III officiating.
