Obituary

Jewell A. (Meadows) Rider, 94, of Gettysburg, died Monday, August 30, 2010 at Genesis Gettysburg Center where she resided less than three weeks.. She was the loving wife of Jason O. Rider, who died in 1982.

Born February 8, 1916 in Neola, WV, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Rusha (Alderman) Meadows.

Jewell was an active member of the Gettysburg Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for over sixty years. She loved teaching people about the Bible. A devoted homemaker throughout most of her life, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidery, gardening, and canning up until the age of 90.

In her earlier years, Jewell was employed at the Carroll Shoe Company in Littlestown and served as a nurse's aide at Gettysburg Hospital. In her free time, she was an avid reader of history books, and she cherished the time spent with family and friends.

Surviving is her daughter, Clara Sanders of Gettysburg; her sister, Opal Malick of Winchester, VA; five grandchildren, Tim Sanders of Gettysburg, Deb Sanders and her husband Jon Nelson of Carroll Valley, Judy Sanders of Las Vegas, Greg Sanders and his wife Dawn of Elizabethtown, and Jackie Hall of York; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jason, Julia, Tamika, Keisha, Ethan, and Alyssa; and five great-great-grandchildren, Xavier, Savannah, Sierra, Sydney, Sienna.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Percy D. Rider, Gene O. Rider, Sherwin R. Rider, and Roy Rider; her grandson, David Sanders; her great-great-granddaughter, Autumn; four brothers; and one sister.

A graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 2 at the Fairfield Union Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1274 Highland Avenue Road, Gettysburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, is in charge of arrangements.
