Obituary

Jean (Cleveland) Lewis, D.C., of Gettysburg, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at home with her family by her side. She was wife of the late George W. Lewis, who died October 29, 1989.

Born September 25, 1919, in Adams County, she was the daughter of the late Robert C. and Ada (Bream) Cleveland, Sr.

After graduating from Gettysburg High School in 1937, Jean worked as the secretary to the Superintendent of Gettysburg Schools, Lloyd Kefauver. She then graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, in 1943. Jean practiced chiropractic in West Chester, PA, for a number of years. She was a long time member of the Gettysburg Women's Christian Temperance Union and a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Gettysburg.

She is survived by three daughters, Elaine Johnson and her husband Mark of Chehalis, WA, Karen L. Arentz and her husband Bill of Gettysburg, and Linda Karper and her husband Cy of Biglerville; her son, Roger W. Lewis and his wife Brenda of Gettysburg; her brother, Robert C. Cleveland, Jr. and his wife Linda of Gettysburg; fifteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Marshall Cleveland and G. Merle Cleveland.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Gettysburg, 1015 Chambersburg Road, Gettysburg, with her pastors, Rev. Carl G. Harris officiating. Viewing will be held between 9:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Biglerville Cemetery. Following interment, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the church.

Serving as pallbearers will be Travis Arentz, Wesley Arentz, Dustin Black, Jacob Lewis, Kevin Lewis, and Ian Lewis.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jean's memory to The Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214 or to a charity of one's choice.
