James "Mick" Shaffer, 71, of Fairfield, passed away peacefully Friday, November 13, 2009 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Lora Mae (Kint) Shaffer.

Born December 19, 1938 in Gettysburg, he was a son of the late Luther and Margaret (Mickley) Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer founded the Shaffer Saw Mill in Fairfield with his wife after their marriage in 1958. He continued to operate the business with his family until his retirement in 1996. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Shaffer loved spending time in the outdoors. He was also an accomplished woodworker who built two homes for his family furnished with his handmade furniture. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and friend.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is his son, James Greg Shaffer and his wife Jill of Fairfield; four daughters, Tammy Joiner and her husband George of Buchanan Valley, Carolyn G. Thomas and her husband James of Gettysburg, Crystal A. Moore and her husband Jeff of Hanover, and April Shorb and her husband Gary Jr. of Fairfield; six brothers; four sisters; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Robyn Shaffer; and one brother.

A private funeral service was held with his niece, Pastor Kathy, officiating and his best friend, Dean Naugle, offering a eulogy and family prayer. Burial was in Fairfield Union Cemetery. The Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Serving as pallbearers were Dean Naugle, George Joiner, Jim Thomas, Derek Thomas, Jeff Moore, Gary Shorb, Jr., Jim Shaffer, and Rick Wrenn.
