Henry Judd Whitfield, 79, of Gettysburg passed away peacefully, after a lengthy battle with cancer, on
Saturday, November 29, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Phyllis (Miller) Whitfield for 44 years.
Born August 13, 1935 in Southampton, Long Island, he was a son of the late John H. and Jean (Judd) Whitfield.
He attended Hoosac School in Hoosac, NY and graduated from Suffield Academy in Suffield, CT. He served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Cold War. Hank moved to Gettysburg in 1958 and worked as an agricultural helicopter pilot for AgRotors, Inc. During his 38 year career with them, he served as a senior pilot and flight instructor, helping to found the flight school, and flew 22,000 hours without an accident. He also worked for Hiller Aviation as a sales representative. Hank loved flying. He flew in Australia, New Zealand, and throughout the United States and its islands.
In addition to his career as a pilot, Hank was the co-owner and curator of the Samuel Colt Heritage
Museum of Fine Firearms and co-owner of Whit's Landing Steak and Seafood Restaurant, both in
Gettysburg. He also worked closely with the Pennsylvania Opry in Mercersburg, PA.
Hank was a member of Good Samaritan Lodge #336, the Adams County Shrine Club, and Prince of Peace Episcopal Church. His hobbies included: traveling, RV'ing, World War II model building and history, classic cars (especially his 1983 Zimmer Golden Spirit), gun collecting, NASCAR, entrepreneurial endeavors, and his love of family and friends.
In addition to his wife Hank is survived by; five daughters; Darby Martin and her husband, Tim, of Commerce, GA, Holly Whitfield of New Oxford, Bonnie Johnson and her husband, Paul, of Newburyport, MA, Heather Swope and her husband, Dave, of Bonneauville, and Beth Carignan and her finance, Bill Greco, of Gettysburg; seven grandchildren – Ayla Hartless and her husband, Micah, of Athens, GA, David Johnson of Commerce, GA, Devon and Camden Johnson of Newburyport, MA, Sarah and Rebecca Swope of Bonneauville, and Miles Carignan of Gettysburg; one great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Hartless of Athens, GA; three sisters - Patricia Wozencraft of Arizona, Ann Radcliff and her husband, Dick, of Biglerville, and Jacqui Whitfield of Chambersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Hank was preceded in death by his 20 year old son, Miles Miller Whitfield, in October of 1994.
A memorial service in celebration of Hank's amazing life will be held at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, 20 W High St, Gettysburg at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014. All are welcome.
