Obituary

Glenda (Deardorff) Harmon, 78, of Gettysburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at home. She was the loving wife of the late Glenn H. Harmon who passed away February 12, 1992; together they shared 29 years of marriage.

Born March 25, 1940 in Fairfield, she was a daughter of the late Glenn D. and Jessie K. (Slonaker) Deardorff.

After graduating from Fairfield High school, class of 1958, Glenda attended Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1961 with an RN Certificate. Throughout her career as an RN Glenda worked for NIH, Holy Cross Hospital, and various nursing homes around the Rockville, MD area. In 1971 Glenda and family moved to her hometown of Fairfield, PA and Glenda began working for Michael Manor Nursing Home in Gettysburg eventually becoming the Director of Nursing. In 1984 Glenda obtained a position with Hanover Hospital in the skilled nursing center, Hillview I, as a nurse manager. In 1993, when Hillview was closed, Glenda transferred to staff development and Patient Education eventually becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator the same year and continued as a CDE until she retired April 2011 at the age of 71.

Glenda had a deep love of her children and grandchildren and was very proud of their accomplishments. Glenda was also a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins and enjoyed bird watching from the comfort of her home. Glenda was known as an avid reader from various fiction writers. After retirement Glenda frequented the Adams County Library, Fairfield branch, and was very well-known by the librarians.

Glenda is survived by two children, Glendon Hayden Harmon and his companion Brenda Lucas of Orrtanna, Marcia Harmon and her husband Steven Frye of Gettysburg; three granddaughters, Kimberly Bentz, Sara Harmon, Cassandra Harmon; one great grandson, Raven Gogan; four siblings, Mary Louise Coe of SC, Charles Deardorff and his wife Sylvia of Fairfield, Jane Andrew and her husband John of Brunswick, MD, Janet Kane of Gettysburg; many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Glenda's two grand-dogs Keelan and Gabby.

In addition to her parents and husband, Glenda was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Margaret Harmon September 25th 1987.

There will be no public viewing. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Glenda will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at St John Lutheran Church, 13 E Main St, Fairfield, PA with Pastor Doug Lichty officiating. A visitation with the family will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church. There will be a meal of fellowship directly after the service at the church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Fairview Cemetery, Arendtsville.
