Obituary

George F. "Bud" Smith, Jr., 88, of York and formerly of Arendtsville, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2009 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Anna Mary (Shue) Smith, who died April 29, 2002.

Born February 8, 1921 in Gettysburg, he was a son of the late George F. and Bessie (McCadden) Smith, Sr.

Mr. Smith served his country honorably as a veteran of the Army Air Force. During World War II, he was stationed in England and served with the 5th Emergency Rescue Squad. Mr. Smith continued to serve in the Air Force until his retirement in 1968 and attained the rank of Master Sergeant.

After his retirement, Bud moved to Arendtsville with his wife and son Jimmy and worked a number of jobs in the Gettysburg area. He was a cigar aficionado, and he enjoyed drawing technical illustrations of airplanes. His family and friends will remember him affectionately for his great sense of humor.

Surviving are two sons, Darwin F. Smith and his wife Sandy of Jeffersonton, VA, and James P. Smith of York; two sisters, Edna Glass and her husband Dave of Emmitsburg, MD, and Betty Hall and her husband Jim of North Carolina; his brother, John Smith of York; his grandson, Glenn S. Smith and his wife Robin of Bradenton, FL; and his great-grandson, Nathan A. Smith.

The funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 29 at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, with Rev. Jay E. Zimmerman officiating. The family will receive friends between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the Adams County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
