Obituary

Gary L. "Reds" Herring, 64, of Gettysburg, went to be with his Lord Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Ephrata Community Hospital. He was the loving husband of Peggy A. (Johnson) Herring, with whom he would have shared his 40th wedding anniversary on April 10.

Born February 12, 1947 in Gettysburg, he was a son of the late Eugene "Tom" and Dorothy "Dubbie" (Huff) Herring.

Gary was an active member of Heritage Assembly of God, Gettysburg, where he served as Deacon and was a former board member. A 1965 graduate of Gettysburg High School, he served his country honorably as a Marine in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart for his valor.

After his discharge, Gary was employed as a machinist at ESAB Cutting and Welding Products, Hanover, for 37 years until his retirement in 2007. He then worked as a packer with Schindler Elevator Corporation in Gettysburg for 2 ½ years.

Gary was a member of the American Legion Post 262, Biglerville. He enjoyed baseball and was a lifelong Phillies fan. An avid outdoorsman, he also loved hunting and fishing.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is his son, Eric E. Herring and wife Becky of Arendtsville; his daughter, Michelle E. Herring of Arendtsville; four sisters, Brenda Herring, Diane Stottlemyer, and Sharon Patterson and husband Jeffrey, all of Gettysburg, and Nancy Husser and husband David of Husser, LA; three grandchildren, Caitlyn M. Wherley, Allison R. Herring, and Dakota E. Herring; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Herring.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Heritage Assembly of God, 1575 Chambersburg Rd., Gettysburg, with Pastor Jeffrey K. Wilson officiating. A viewing will be held between 6 and 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg. A second viewing will begin 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens where full military honors will be provided by Adams County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.

Serving as pallbearers will be Eugene Johnson, Jr., Larry Johnson, Jeffrey Patterson, David Husser, Michael Herring, Sr., and David Swope.
