Eugene "Gig" B. Johnson, Sr., 88 of Fayetteville, formerly of Gettysburg, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Michaux Manor Living Center. He was the loving husband of the late Catherine M. Johnson; together they shared 68 years of marriage.
Born August 9, 1928 in Footedale, PA, he was a son of the late Edward E. Johnson and Theckla V. McCall.
Eugene was a loving husband, father, and grandfather; he cherished the time he spent with his family. Gig joined the Army during World War II and was honorably discharged; he was a coach and player for South Penn Baseball, attended Heritage Assembly of God in Gettysburg and retired from Century Link Telephone Company after 45 years of employment; in his free time, Gig enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Eugene is survived by his children, Peggy Ann Herring of Gettysburg, Yvonne K. Troxell of Gettysburg, Eugene B. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Carol of Biglerville and Larry L. Johnson and his wife Kathy of Gettysburg; seven grandchildren, Michelle Smith and her husband Dan, Eric Herring and his wife Becky, Melanie Handelong and her husband Bob, Anthony Johnson and his wife Jenny, Crystal Stephenson and her husband Andy, Barrett Johnson, Melissa Troxell and Lyle Slaybaugh; ten great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Wherley and Jesse Plank, Allison Herring, Dakota Herring, Olivia Handelong, Kyler Johnson, Cody Johnson, Kaytie Stephenson, Kase Stephenson, Charlie Stephenson, Lilly Johnson; one great great grandson Wyatt James Plank; a sister, Bonnie Lee Jacoby, and a brother, E. Ernest Johnson.
In addition to his parents and wife, Eugene was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Katherine Walker and a son-in-law, Gary L. Herring.
A service to celebrate the life of Eugene will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Heritage Assembly of God, 1575 Chambersburg Rd., Gettysburg, PA with Pastor Todd McCauslin officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home, Inc., 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg and then again on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Gettysburg. Serving as pallbearers will be Eric Herring, Anthony Johnson, Barrett Johnson, Dakota Herring, Dan Smith and Bob Handelong.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Gig's memory to Heritage Assembly of God, at the address listed above or to Michaux Manor Living Center, 11302 S Mountain Rd, Fayetteville, PA 17222.
