Elizabeth C. "Betty" Sweigart, 93, of Gettysburg passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013 at her home. She was the wife of Roy Sweigart, Gettysburg. Together they would have celebrated 64 years of marriage on April 23, 2013.
She was born December 10, 1919 in Germantown the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha (Reed) Cooling.
Mrs. Sweigart graduated from Olney High School, Philadelphia, received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Temple University and earned her Master's Degree from Rutgers University. She taught at schools in Atco, NJ, Spring Mill, PA, Wayne, PA and ended her career in West Windsor Township, NJ. Mrs. Sweigart was a church organist and choir director in Philadelphia and New Jersey. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists, enjoyed reading, flower gardening and spending time together with her husband. After moving to Gettysburg, she joined the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Sweigart, Gettysburg, son, Charles Sweigart, Providence, RI, sister, Dorothy Jolly, Lancaster, grandsons, Ryan, Andrew and Patrick Sweigart all of California and niece, Janet Jolly and her husband Rev. Chris Vogel, Waukesha, WI.
A funeral service will be held Friday, March 1, 2013 at 11 AM at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle Street, Gettysburg with Rev. Dale Williams officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 PM and on Friday from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 3 PM at Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, 1865 Knoxlyn Road, Gettysburg. Burial will be in Lower Marsh Creek Cemetery, Gettysburg.
