Born December 18, 1930 at home in Woodbine, MD. He was a son of the late Charles and Mary Slagle.
William, also known as Bill, was a dairy farmer in Maryland before becoming store manager of Central Tractor in Frederick, then returning to the dairy farming industry in Gettysburg, PA in 1971. Bill also hauled livestock for several years, he then started driving for the Brethren Home in Cross Keys for eight years and then for SpiriTrust Lutheran Home in Gettysburg for an additional seven years. Bill was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where he served as a lay speaker and was on several committees before transferring his membership to Gettysburg United Methodist Church. Bill was also a member of the Gettysburg Gideon Camp where he was active in handing out bibles; he was also a frequent visitor to the Upper Adams Senior Center.
Bill is survived by five children, Martin Slagle of Gettysburg, Karen Smith and her husband Brent of Gettysburg, Kevin Slagle and his wife Mary Beth of Terre Hill, PA, Glen Slagle of Gettysburg, Ritchie Slagle and his wife Connie of York; nine grandchildren, Brad Kuhn, Melissa DeCola, Katie Smith, Travis Smith, Chad Laughman, Jared Slagle, Sara Hite, Laura Slagle and Kelly Slagle; nine great grandchildren, Tyler, Aryanna, Lilah, Emilia, Charlotte, Emma, Brady, Gabriella, and Elizabeth.
A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. at the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA and then on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at Haight Funeral Home. A service to celebrate the life of Bill will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018 at Haight Funeral Home, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Eldersburg, MD, with Pastor Jay Zimmerman officiating. Interment will be in Mt. View Cemetery, Marriottsville, MD.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren; Brad Kuhn, Melissa DeCola, Katie Smith, Travis Smith, Chad Laughman, Jared Slagle, Sara Hite, Laura Slagle and Kelly Slagle.
Per Bill's request, in lieu of flowers please donate for bibles to be donated to the Gideons online at https://www.sendtheword.org or cards will be available at the viewing and funeral for donations to be made to the Gideons.
