Bertha L. (Mickey) Bankes, 95, of Fayetteville and formerly of Biglerville and St. Petersburg, FL, passed peacefully Tuesday, August 05, 2008 at the Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville. She was the wife of the late Alfred W. Bankes, who died in 1986.

Born August 30, 1912, in Greencastle, she was a daughter of the late William and Alice (Burkholder) Mickey.

Mrs. Bankes was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, Biglerville. She and her husband owned and operated a hardware store while residing in Harrisburg for a number of years. Previously, Mrs. Bankes was employed by the Gettysburg Hospital.

A 1930 graduate of Gettysburg High School, she was a member of the National AARP, Biglervile Senior Citizens, and the Biglerville Kitchenettes. In her free time, Mrs. Bankes loved to watch baseball games and follow current events.

Surviving is her sister-in-law, Hilda M. Mickey, of Carlisle; and a number of nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2008 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 99 N. Main St., Biglerville, with Rev. Matthew Loyer officiating. A viewing will be held between 1 and 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Biglerville Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg.

Serving as pallbearers will be James Mickey, Thomas Mickey, Benjamin Mickey, Dwight Mickey, Norman Kuykendall, Charles Null, and Robert Meyers.
